Writing the example report, A2 Art Personal Study: examples, help and guidance. February 8, 2017 by Amiria Gale. This article has been written for CIE A Level Art students who are working on their A2 Art Personal Study. It focuses purely on essay on importance how to write the text of the example of discussion in lab report, Study; a previous article outlines how to come up with a good topic; a future article will address the illustrations and presentation methods. The Personal Study is an area of uncertainty for many A Level Art students. It differs from projects that are usually completed within high school Art programmes, as it involves a substantial written component (maximum 3,500 words) – something which can intimidate students, especially if they are unfamiliar with how to for book report, critically analyse an artwork, make informed judgements and report, write personal evaluations.
With few examples of quality Personal Studies available, it can be difficult to know what is expected and how to begin. This article aims to ease this uncertainty and to make the Personal Study a more easily understood Component. This is the cover page of an A* Personal Study by Nikau Hindin, exploring the cover page report, topic: ‘Identity, Consumerism, Popular Culture: How Composition Conveys a Message’. Of Discussion Report! The project analyses artwork by New Zealand artist Kelsy Taratoa. The Personal Study should be comprised of informed personal views – that is, views that are supported and shaped by an in-depth understanding of the issues discussed. Before starting the project, students should conduct thorough background research, selecting and recording information from sunshine of the second-hand sources (such as books, websites and other publications) and first-hand sources (interviews with artists, studio visits / gallery visits etc).
Interviews with artists should be planned thoroughly, after preliminary second-hand research has been completed (as findings from research will suggest important issues to discuss with the artist). Students are often uncertain about how to example report, phrase questions, so sample questions have been included below (the exact questions asked will depend on the topic and focus of the study): Please talk me through the process you follow when designing your paintings. Do you work instinctively, directly onto the canvas, or are your works pre-planned, using sketches and page for book, photographs? What influences your choice of colour? I am interested particularly in the colours used in example in lab report, [insert name of painting/s].
Could you explain your thought process behind the use of colour in this work, particularly the [give example]? I notice that your work has been described as [insert relevant comment from second-hand sources]. Do you agree with this statement? How do you respond to this? I notice that [insert an research outline aesthetic feature of their artwork i.e. ‘angular line’ or ‘organic form’] is a dominant feature of your work. Is this strongly connected to in lab, the ideas that you are exploring? Have you used these elements deliberately? Can you show me work in progress or semi-complete artwork? I would love to understand the process you go through and research paper on acute lymphocytic leukemia, how you apply media at different stages.
Are there any tips you would give to someone who was attempting to emulate your painting style? Which artists have influenced your work? In what way has your work been shaped by example in lab report, others people, events or situations? 2. Evaluate and interpret research findings. Conducting research is critical for creating an al qaeda research outline excellent Personal Study, however, it should be noted that submitting research on example in lab its own will not gain a student any marks. Photocopying, cutting and pasting or transcribing information from other sources is not acceptable. Examiners do not want to read long lists of facts or chronological sequences of events. They do not want long-winded technical processes or the al qaeda research outline, inclusion of broad periods of art history; nor entire interviews with artists (interviews can be submitted as part of an appendix if necessary).
Students should not include an extensive artist biography (only brief and relevant details are needed) nor include vast passages of text that have been regurgitated from other sources. Instead, students must select the information which is relevant and analyse this in detail, evaluating and interpreting findings in relation to report, the focus of their study . Research should be used to help form intelligent, knowledgeable, personal responses : to explain, justify or support the viewpoints, judgements and conclusions that are presented. Evidence of research might be demonstrated, for example, through the use of carefully chosen quotes (to support or contrast the student’s own ideas) or through the paper lymphocytic leukemia, inclusion of example in lab correct terminology and background knowledge to communicate an in-depth understanding of relevant issues. Evidence might also be indicated photographically, with images depicting first-hand meetings between the student and artist/s. This Personal Study by CIE A2 Level Art and Design student Alice Ham, from paper ACG Parnell College, shows a cleverly selected quote alongside images by New Zealand charcoal artist Liam Gerrard. Alice was awarded full marks (100%) for this component (99% overall for A Level). A carefully composed Personal Study page for report, 9704 CIE Art and Design. 3. Structure the Personal Study in a logical and clear manner. Before writing the Personal Study, students should plan the content, order and structure of their study thoroughly (often in cover page for book, conjunction with planning the layout of their project – this will discussed in example report, more detail in a subsequent post). This should include headings and subheadings of material discussed and rough diagrams indicating how this will be supported by images.
The proposed structure should then be checked and approved by a teacher, with recommendations and clear guidance given. While the structure of research outline each Personal Study will differ, depending on the topic chosen, every study should follow the basic format outlined below: Introduction . This is example of discussion, where students outline the research, purpose, focus or mission of their study. This may include question/s they are going to answer; themes they are going to explore; issues they hope to address etc. It should set the scene for of discussion in lab report, the project and words to use in essays, may include reasons for selecting a topic and an indication of of discussion in lab report how / why the of school life, topic is of personal relevance or interest to the student. In Lab! It is important that the sunshine of the analytical, intentions of the project are clearly set out in this section, so that the remainder of the project can be structured accordingly. In Lab! Body . This is the main part of the of school life, Personal Study and will need careful thought. It is usually organised into separate sections (which may be formal chapters, or simply different areas of example in lab a visual study), usually with individual headings and sometimes sub-headings. (I recommend wording headings so that they sum up the material contained – i.e. ‘ Analysis of Composition: [artwork title] ’ rather than ‘ Chapter 3 ’. This means that the examiner is able to see immediately that the student has covered a range of appropriate areas).
The sections should be ordered logically and address the focus of the project; they should NOT ramble haphazardly from one issue to the next. High school Art students have a tendency to 10 good words to use in essays, write without any preconceived order or structure, discussing issues spontaneously as they think of them. While this can be a suitable approach for more creative writing tasks – and can pulled off by certain students – this strategy runs the risk of creating a muddled and incoherent Personal Study. Conclusion . This is where students summarise key points from the project, arrive at final conclusions and make considered personal judgements about example what has been learnt. This is one of the concluding paragraphs in a Personal Study by Nikau Hindin (who achieved 98% for CIE A Level Art while studying at ACG Parnell College), entitled ‘ Identity, Consumerism Popular Culture: How composition conveys a message ‘. The project was focused upon the analysis of paper lymphocytic artwork by New Zealand artist Kelcy Taratoa, with comparisons made with the work of American artist Bill Barminski: Taratoa’s use of composition helps convey his message concerning identity construction. The arrangement of elements is symbolic of an unconscious hierarchy within his paintings that forces the viewer to question and analyse them.
The contents of the paintings can be identified, as they reflect New Zealand society. Of Discussion! Taratoa’s use of colour is eternal analytical essay, vibrant and modern, echoing the technological era we live in. Barminski has a more dynamic and example in lab, humorous approach to conveying his message. He mocks consumerism with his witty and blunt slogans and replications of essay consumer products. While these two artists are very different, they both communicate their own attitudes about example of discussion in lab report society. Research Lymphocytic! Making a political statement through your paintings forces an example report audience to engage. Leukemia! Ultimately we want our art to be remembered and example in lab report, admired and I think if the message of paper on acute lymphocytic a painting is clear then the viewer is more likely to go away and think about it. Paintings are a powerful tool to communicate a meaning that is deeper than the 2mm of in lab paint on a canvas. Paintings are an completed artist’s voice.
Bibliography / References / Acknowledgements . This should list any resources that students have used in example of discussion, their project, including books, websites, articles and videos. It might also include sources of first-hand information, such as museums, galleries or websites, as well as acknowledgements, thanking the artist for their time. While examiners are sympathetic towards a student whose first language is not English, a similar sympathy does not extend towards those who submit sloppy, poorly edited material. Just as it is in essays, expected that a Coursework project should contain beautiful well-composed artwork, a Personal Study is expected to contain well-structured, well-edited material. Even if a student has chosen to of discussion report, produce a largely visual project, submitting a sequence of annotated images, the text should communicate with intention and the writing quality should match that achieved by an A Level English student. Poor grammar, spelling errors and ‘txt’ speak are inexcusable. As with any important written project, drafts should be rewritten and refined several times: chapters re-arranged; paragraphs and sunshine spotless analytical essay, annotation reorganised; repetitive material, waffle and unnecessary regurgitation eliminated. Of Discussion! Teachers, parents and friends can all be recruited to read through drafts, highlighting spelling errors and identifying areas where the writing is muddled. While the essay on importance of school life, work must of course remain entirely that of the student, feedback from a fresh set of eyes is invaluable. A Personal Study should include an appropriate range of of discussion in lab report Art related terms and vocabulary. While the exact words used will be dependent upon the nature and focus of the 10 good in essays, study, there are a number of general Art-specific terms which students should be familiar with (these will be listed, with their definitions, in example, an upcoming article).
Use of appropriate vocabulary helps to fulfil the ‘Knowledge and critical understanding’ assessment criteria. As the title indicates, a Personal Study must communicate distinctly personal opinions, insights, judgements and responses, demonstrating a clear engagement with the artwork studied. This excerpt from an 100% OCR A Level Art Personal Study by Yantra Scott entitled ‘ An investigation into gender roles in contemporary art ‘ illustrates this: I first encountered Sarah Lucas whist briskly strolling through the crowded rooms of the Tate. Amongst oils and finely crafted sculpture my eyes were transfixed in a two-way glare with a slightly butch, totally intense woman, with eggs for 10 good words in essays, t*ts. Ever since then I’ve been hooked. It is evident that Yantra not only visited and viewed artwork in the flesh, but had a strong personal reaction to it. It could never be assumed that this segment had been reworded from a textbook: it is absolutely the words of a passionate high school Art student. Although Yantra uses coarse language within her study (something which should be emulated with caution) this project is an exceptional example of an in lab intelligent and research on acute lymphocytic, personal response to example in lab report, a topic. (More of cover for book Yantra’s work, as well as the entire text of her study, can be read in full on the great Julia Stubbs’ website).
Similarly, this quote from an example in lab report 88% OCR A2 Art Personal Study (one of the page report, examples given in of discussion in lab, the OCR A2 Art Exemplar Work – Personal Study document) shows a personal response integrated within the analysis of Damien Hurst’s work, illustrated below. The glass is thick, so thick that it is intimidating. It is as if it is holding something terrible back. It makes you question the formaldehyde and for book report, query, what if the example of discussion in lab report, tank did break? The formaldehyde is not clear as I expected but is quite strongly coloured by a blue and green pigment. This colour is very clinical and has the research paper lymphocytic leukemia, connotations of a hospital… The musings about the tank breaking and the formaldehyde differing from expectations are clearly the individual thoughts of a high school art student. Some Comfort Gained from the Acceptance of the Inherent Lies in of discussion in lab report, Everything 2006, Damien Hurst. Within the Personal Study, students must demonstrate an understanding of cultural context – an understanding that an artist does not create work in page, isolation, but rather creates work that is shaped and influenced by the circumstance/s they finds themselves in. This might mean that discussion of the influence of natural, social, political or cultural environments is appropriate, or that – as is more common – the influence of other artists is discussed, with comparisons made between artwork that has been created in of discussion in lab, similar or differing contexts. ‘One night in Mong Kok’ by Akif Hakan Celebi.
The excerpt below is from research on acute leukemia a CIE A Level Art and Design Personal Study by Tirion Jenkins, of of discussion YMCA of thesis Hong Kong Christian College. Titled ‘Alternative Fashion Photography’, her Personal Study was awarded Best in Hong Kong (2012) and of discussion, includes analysis of ‘One night in Mong Kok’ by photographer Akif Hakan Celebi. Tirion demonstrates a clear understanding of the interrelationship between a photographer’s work and the setting in which it was created. The setting itself creates an intoxicating atmosphere with the rows of fluorescent light bulbs and layers of luminous signs that form an endless maze of gaudy colours. However, the setting does not overwhelm the two models who draw my eyes despite the signs above them. They create the focal point of the image through the eternal of the spotless mind analytical essay, use of the rule of thirds as they are placed off-centre and through their quirky appearance which magnetises the eye towards them. They seem to belong to a different world to the passersby behind them with their flare of in lab red hair and audacious choice of feathered flittered clothes.
Akif has further crafted the image through the cover for book, use of makeup as their chalk white faces further segregates and emphasises their surreal doll-like appearances. …Akif’s pictures are reminiscent of of discussion in lab Japanese cinema which he says he is so influenced by. “I like…its writhed and crazy stories; I feel very close to that way of completed thesis looking at the world.” This photograph is example in lab, particularly mystical due to the vibrant and decorative bokeh of Hong Kong’s street lights in completed, the background. The core of the A2 Art Personal Study is the of discussion, in-depth analysis of selected artist works. Some of these artworks must be viewed in person, however it is common (and completely acceptable) for students to analyse work from a combination of primary and secondary sources. In the best studies, artworks are chosen specifically to facilitate the discussion of issues which are relevant to the study. The advice in this section is particularly important and should be read closely by students who are hoping to research on acute leukemia, achieve a high grade for their Personal Study. When analysing artwork, it is example, helpful to analyse the paper, work in terms of composition, format, structure and visual elements (such as shape, line, texture, colour, space, tone) . Students might de-construct an artwork and view it in terms of a single visual element and/or discuss how the example of discussion in lab report, visual elements interact, relate, contrast, balance and essay on importance of school, connect with one another.
Descriptions of important terms have been included below to aid this process: Composition is the placement or organisation of visual elements within an artwork – the way these have been composed, combined or ‘put together’. Composition may be instinctual or the result of example in lab report elaborate planning (or a combination of both). A ‘compositional device’ is an aspect of a composition which has a certain effect (such as the use of frames within frames, which might help create a sense of distance or space within an artwork). Of School Life! Format is the overall shape, size and orientation (portrait or landscape) of an artwork, i.e. whether a work is painted on a long, horizontal oblong canvas, or upon a vertically orientated A4 portrait board. Format can be influenced by practical considerations (i.e. the nature and example of discussion, shape of the object or scene depicted) as well as being an active decision by the artist to help communicate a particular meaning or idea. Of The Mind Essay! The structure of an artwork is the example of discussion in lab, organisation of basic forms within a composition (this will be illustrated in more detail in the subsequent post focusing on imagery). Lines are a visual element that can direct a viewer’s gaze and paper, create a visual path. These can direct attention to a focal point and create depth through perspective or horizon lines. Example Report! Different lines can create different effects: hard angular lines provoke a different response than soft, organic lines, for example. Repetition of lines can create a sense of movement or rhythm.
Shape is a visual element that is created by the junction of lines or changes in tone: the perceived boundaries of form. Page Report! Larger shapes can become dominant focal points within an artwork; similar shapes can be repeated to in lab, create balance and create unity / visual harmony. Words To Use! Shapes can be symbolic, i.e. Example Of Discussion In Lab Report! they can represent more complex forms and carry meaning. As with lines, the types of to use in essays shapes used can communicate certain feelings – rigorous ordered shapes tend to create a different mood than irregular, free-flowing shapes. Example Report! Shapes might also be used to create borders / frames and boundaries that connect, overlap or intersect, perhaps helping to draw viewers from the foreground / middle-ground to background. Space – the absence of essay life form – is an often overlooked visual element. Described as being either positive (the space contained within the boundary of an object) or negative (the background space in example in lab, and around an object), space can determine how busy and cluttered a painting is. A busy composition can overwhelm a viewer; a simple and sparse composition may appear boring. Thesis! Careful integration of space is fundamental to any artwork. Form is a visual element that is usually discussed more easily in relation to three dimensional objects (as three-dimensional forms are usually described within two dimensional works in terms of example of discussion report shape, tone and line). Colour (or hue) is a visual element that is often discussed in combination with tone(how light or dark a colour appears).
Colour can affect the mood of an artwork due to colour associations – i.e. blue might indicate sadness. Tone can help to communicate a sense of eternal of the spotless mind analytical essay distance (items that are further away generally appear lighter – due to ‘atmospheric perspective’). Example Of Discussion In Lab! Both tone and colour can be used to create contrast within an artwork, attracting the viewer’s attention and helping to create focal areas. Of The Mind Analytical! Alternatively, both tone and colour can be used to create harmonious, peaceful non-contrasting areas. Use of light and shadow or warm and cool might also be an example in lab important area to page report, discuss.
Texture can be real (the result of brush strokes, irregularities in example of discussion report, materials, and the application of a range of materials) or implied…i.e. a surface that is made to looktextured. As with the other visual elements, texture should be integrated so that it balances and al qaeda research, becomes an aesthetically pleasing addition to an artwork. Surface qualities – along with other detailed areas and in lab, intricate patterns – are only able to essay on importance of school life, be appreciated fully when viewed in person. It should be noted here that students should not submit reams of text explaining how certain visual elements affect artworks in general, but rather use this knowledge to of discussion report, write informed analysis about the artworks in question. Here is another example by Nikau Hindin, discussing the 10 good words in essays, use of line in paintings by Kelcy Taratoa.
This text was accompanied by diagrams illustrating the linear elements in the artwork. …Taratoa uses strong angular forms that create diagonal perspective lines. These lines are called ‘leading lines’ and direct us to the focal point of this painting, which is a portrait of Taratoa. They also lead our eyes past him and make us look at the background. Of Discussion! This helps to convey Taratoa’s message that one’s identity is linked to essay of school life, social circumstance, upbringing (background) and popular culture. Street markings form white lines and also draw our attention to the focal point.
Street markings represent paths and therefore they may be paths to finding and constructing ones identity. They create a sense of movement and highlight the example in lab, direction one’s eyes should travel within the painting. The street markings in ‘Episode 007’ are curvaceous which creates movement. The curvy lines mirror the completed thesis, organic forms of the superhero’s muscular body, creating a visual link. In ‘Episode 0010’ the repetition of line of the zebra crossing creates a sense of rhythm and leads us to the portrait of Taratoa in the left corner. Horizontal lines are repeated in the background of the painting to unite separate parts of the painting. As well as the aesthetic qualities discussed above, most students also include sections where they analyse artwork in example report, terms of materials, processes, stylistic influences, techniques (use of media) . For some, this is the eternal of the essay, primary focus of the Personal Study.
This might include analysis of the way an artist has applied paint to in lab, a canvas (mark-making, brush strokes), the sequence of building up layers of paint over a prepared ground, or the sequence of events involved in creating a graphic design: from conceptual sketches, development of ideas, construction in Photoshop, through to essay on importance of school, proofing, paper selection and example, final printing. It might involve discussion about the way a composition is cover report, planned and designed and then the various processes that are undertaken in example of discussion in lab, its completion. Page! It might include cultural contexts and stylistic influences from other artists. In any sections of the example of discussion in lab report, Personal Study which are dedicated to process and technique, it is important to note (as mentioned above) that the examiners do not want the regurgitation of long, technical processes, but rather would like to see personal observations about how processes effect and influence the artwork that has been created. In all analysis of artwork, whether this involves discussion of composition, aesthetic qualities, cultural contexts, use of media, or approach to a theme, it is important that students move beyond simple observations and add perceptive, personal insight. On Importance Life! For example, if a student notices that colour has been used to create strong contrast in certain areas of an artwork, they might follow this with a detailed and thoughtful assumption about why this is the case: for example, perhaps the contrast was created deliberately to draw attention to a focal point in the artwork, helping the report, artist to cover, help convey thematic ideas. These personal insights could be backed up by earlier research, confirmed or suggested by the artist, or might be educated assumptions made by the student, based upon their own responses and personal interaction with the artwork.
Some final recommendations are included below: ‘Analysis of artwork’ does not mean ‘description of artwork’ . Analysis means taking an of discussion report artwork apart (thinking about it in cover page, terms of individual elements, such as line, or colour or technique), analysing these individually and/or in terms of how they relate to one another, and making personal observations and of discussion, judgements, connecting this to the theme or focus of the assignment. Saying “I like this” or “I don’t like this” without any further explanation or justification is not analysis . Writing should be carefully integrated with the images , so that it is clear which text relates to which images (this will be discussed more in the subsequent post). Alice Ham, a Year 13 student at ACG Parnell College (awarded 100% for her Personal Study) has produced some excellent analysis of artwork by Liam Gerrard: In most works (the exception usually applies to those done in cover page report, commission) the focus of the piece is centred, surrounded by empty space and never grounded through shadow or the like. This is another way in which Gerrard plays with commonly held opinions. Typically, a most aesthetically pleasing composition will follow the rule of thirds – a well known ‘rule’ that correlates to the focus of artworks being offset within the composition, and the entire image being visually divided into 3 sections. Liam has little care for this standardised rule, yet his compositions are visually pleasing all the same.
I believe this could be because of the example of discussion report, negative space, there is no overcrowding and it allows the viewer to focus on the subject. Al Qaeda Research Paper Outline! I also think this space is played upon in the display of the artwork. Galleries in general will have white or very light coloured walls so as not to distract from what is on display. By placing these white canvases on the white walls, hung without obvious framing, the artwork is allowed to ‘flow’ into the viewer’s world, there is no line of separation. This forces the viewer to example of discussion in lab report, study Gerrard’s pieces, and perhaps consider the personal message they address for eternal of the spotless, the viewer in everyday life.
Analysis of artwork within an report A Level Art Personal Study by Alice Ham. Some of the text above has been reproduced here to aid ease of page reading: The expression on example of discussion the pig’s face is perhaps what would draw the viewer into eternal sunshine spotless analytical essay this picture the most. It directly contradicts the example of discussion in lab, gruesome depiction of decapitation and life, appears almost to example, be laughing. This work like most of Gerrard’s others is a single object centred on a stark white background. The amount of empty space in this picture is eternal sunshine of the spotless mind analytical, very eye catching and directs the viewer’s vision inwards, there is no chance of example in lab report distraction by details in a menial part of the work. Once again Gerrard uses charcoal in his personal style, leaving the artwork in black and white. This lack of colour is cold, it presents the reality of the grisly scene without the embellishment of colours. This does not allow the audience to be caught up in what is ‘pretty’ but forces them to take in every details in it’s highly realistic, and perhaps disturbing, state. Completed! The shock factor of this piece is emphasised ten- fold by the sheer size. It cannot be realised until you view this piece in reality, but being dwarfed looking up into a pig’s head captured mid laugh brings upon report, you a bizarre sense of leukemia fascination.
9. Explain the relationship to example report, Coursework (if appropriate) As explained in the previous post about topic selection, it is no longer necessary that the for book report, Personal Study relate to a student’s Coursework project. If there is a strong relationship, however, students may wish to include a section in their Personal Study where relevant comparisons are made with their Coursework project. The maximum word count for CIE Art Design Personal Studies is 3,500 words. This is a maximum and fewer words is example of discussion in lab report, more than appropriate (especially in primarily visual studies). If a student is slightly over lymphocytic, the word count, this is unlikely to be an issue (it is rare that examiners would know your exact word count, as no-one is likely to example in lab report, count every word in a project from start to finish); however, if a student is significantly over cover, the word limit, this is obvious and a problem, running the risk that the examiners will run out of time (or enthusiasm) to read your project in its entirety. Almost all cases of word count breaches come from students who have attempted to bulk up their study with unnecessary information from second-hand sources.
If you are encroaching the word limit, you should immediately ensure that you have not included supplementary research material or unnecessary information summarised from report textbooks. 10 Good Words To Use In Essays! If you are still battling with the word count and example of discussion, inclusion of research outline material from example of discussion in lab second-hand sources is not an issue, you should re-edit your project, eliminating waffle, and ensuring you communicate succinctly. I encourage teachers to locate and print the excerpts from research Personal Studies that are included in the 9704 Standards booklet on the CIE Teachers’ password protected site, which can be downloaded as a PDF document from the A Level Art Design page. This document is invaluable. Finally, we are actively looking for more examples of high achieving Personal Studies to share on the Student Art Guide. americaism+essays Disrupting the Discourse of Conquest: The Suppression of Sepúlveda. First Impressions: Title Pages and example in lab First Contacts. (1) Theodor DeBry's late 16th century Columbus Landing in for book, Indias depicts a propagandist vision of American Indians receiving their conquerors, one that is desperately in need of a deconstructive reading. Foregrounded are shy but welcoming renditions of the noble savage, bearing sophisticated specimens of gifts attesting to an astounding degree of example of discussion aboriginal metallurgy. Words To Use! Columbus swaggers forward to plant the staff of conquest, the snide expression on his face approaching lewdness as he appraises the scantily clad natives. But an even more telling narrative occurs on the margins, where one glimpses several diminutive native bodies in the throes of what looks like panic. Overwhelmed by this invasion of loud and example of discussion in lab report obtrusive machinery, they run in 10 good words in essays, circles, imploring the heavens for deliverance. Example Of Discussion In Lab! Is this marginalized representation a nod to the discourse of the Indian as a superstitious, unlettered barbarian, the pole that normally opposes the noble savage myth among the warring factions of conquest justification?
Through the hindsight of the twenty-first century eye, the antics of these wild natives would appear to be a most appropriate reaction of truly forward-thinking, rational minds. Truth be told, the real barbarians were at the gates . . . . The Debate: Submissive Sheep or Fierce Barbarians (Not Much of essay a Choice) (2) The 1550 debate on Native American capacity and rights that took place at Valladolid, Spain, involved two principal participants: Bartolomé de las Casas and Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda. A well-known figure in Spanish colonial discourse whose prolific body of example in lab report work has been circulated and analyzed for the last five hundred years, Las Casas has been touted as The Apostle of the Indians, a lone voice crying out for of school life Indian rights in a wilderness of Spanish brutality. The second participant, Sepúlveda, is lesser known, perhaps justly so, when one considers his Aristotelian-derived argument on example of discussion report the natural slavery of the American Indian. Banned by to use in essays the Spanish crown, seldom translated and example report underrepresented among historical and literary criticism of the discourse of the period, Sepúlveda's works have gathered dust in the crypt reserved for the outmoded, the heretical, and the threatening. (3) Ostensibly an argument over 10 good words to use the justification of war in the conquest of the New World, the Valladolid debate hinges upon conflicting interpretations of of discussion report New World inhabitants.
Las Casas, following in the tradition of the noble savage school founded by Columbus, whose journal Las Casas abstracted, draws a portrait of the Native American as non-threatening and paper outline ripe for Christian plucking: God created these simple people without evil and without guile. They are most obedient and faithful to their natural lords and to the Christians whom they serve. They are most submissive, patient, peaceful and virtuous. Nor are they quarrelsome, rancorous, querulous, or vengeful. Moreover they are more delicate than princes and die easily from work or illness. They neither possess nor desire to possess worldly wealth. Surely these people would be the most blessed in the world if only they worshipped the true God. Example Of Discussion! (qtd. in Hanke, First Social Experiments 20) Sepúlveda, rather, follows the barbarian school of cover thought in assessing Native intelligence and capacity. Although concerned about example of discussion in lab report reputed barbarity and completed thesis crimes against nature, Sepúlveda, too, diminishes the native threat by of discussion in lab report diminishing the native people but in a more blatantly offensive way: In prudence, talent, virtue, and humanity they are as inferior to the Spaniards as children to adults, women to 10 good men, as the wild and cruel to the most meek, as the prodigiously intemperate to of discussion in lab the continent and temperate, that I have almost said, as monkeys to sunshine of the men. (Sepúlveda, qtd. in Hanke, All Mankind 84) Sepúlveda's qualification here reflects the prudence that causes him to leave this comment from Demócrates Segundo out example of discussion in lab report, of the completed summary that will become his Apología ( Defense ), the text considered at Valladolid. Tellingly, the lack of parallelism that links natives, women, children, and animals with wildness and cruelty while positing adult men as meek and temperate conflates might, meekness, and virtue, providing an essential and essentializing piece of the faulty logic that underpins conquest justification.
While neither of the texts quoted above contributed specifically to the Valladolid debate, they are instructive in of discussion in lab, terms of establishing a conquest climate profoundly influenced by notions of Eurocentric superiority. In this sense, Sepúlveda's comments reflect dominant ideology more accurately and to use in essays obviously and are therefore more threatening to the politics of example of discussion in lab justification. Forging Empire through Literature: Framing Texts of the Debate. (6) Beginning with the papal bull Romanus Pontifex , which established a benign European paternalism as the motivation for imperialist conquest, and Inter caetera , itself inspired by Columbus's noble savage school (Muldoon 40), the discourse of conquest has built its structure upon the rock of Christian superiority. Essay Of School Life! Such was the basis for the founding of the Spanish colonial encomienda system, an embodi[ment of] the ironic thesis that in of discussion, administering the pope's Petrine responsibility to save the Indians, the Spanish Crown had to enslave them (Williams 84). By placing Indians under the charge of cover page for book Spanish masters in of discussion in lab, forced labor situations, the research lymphocytic Spanish Crown hoped to quell both resistance and example of discussion in lab indifference to conversion tactics through a sort of mandatory quasi-assimilation. Native resistance and indifference, the sort of obstacles considered by Sepúlveda as a hindrance to conquest, become cogs on which to turn the wheel of justification discourse, as this excerpt from the Laws of Burgos attests: Should the natives attempt to oppose the page settlement [of a colony], they shall be given to example report understand that the intention in forming it, is to teach them to know God and his holy law, by which they are to be saved; to preserve friendship with them, and teach them to live in a civilized state. . . . They shall be convinced of this by mild means, through the of the spotless mind analytical interference of religion and priests, . . . and if, notwithstanding, they do withhold their consent, the settlers . . . shall proceed to make their settlement . . Example! . without doing them any greater damage than shall be necessary. (qtd. in Williams 87-88) Shortly after the enactment of the Burgos code, a charter of conquest known as the Requerimiento emerges as the most ironic example of the discursive clash between Old World theory and New World practice. Drafted in 1513 by Juan López de Palacios Rubios, this document embodies Eurocentrism writ large, in on acute lymphocytic, that it exhorts its uncomprehending auditors to of discussion surrender or die but does so through the guise of Christian missionary zeal: [W]e ask and require that you [ . . . Of School Life! ] acknowledge the Church as the ruler and superior of the of discussion whole world and the high priest called Pope and in his name the king and queen [ . . . ] our lords, in his place, as superiors and lords and kings of these islands and this mainland [ . . . ], and research paper on acute leukemia that you consent and permit that these religious fathers declare and of discussion preach to you. Completed Thesis! [. . . In Lab Report! ] [I]f you do not do this or if you maliciously delay in doing it, I certify to you that with the completed thesis help of God we shall forcefully enter into your country and shall make war against you in all ways and manners that we can, and shall submit you to the yoke and obedience of the Church and of their highnesses [ . . Of Discussion! . ], and we shall take away your goods and shall do to you all the harm and damage that we can, [ . . Completed! . ] and in lab we protest that the deaths and losses that shall accrue from this are your fault . . . . (Parry 288) The practice of reading this warning aloud exemplifies the travesty of on acute lymphocytic attempting to justify conquest. As Lewis Hanke imagines in his evocative recreation of this practice, Captains muttered its theological phrases into their beard on the edge of sleeping Indian settlements, or even a league away before starting the formal attack, and at times some leather-lunged Spanish notary hurled its sonorous phrases after the Indians as they fled into the mountains. Example Of Discussion! (qtd. in Williams 92) James Muldoon notes the perversion of Inter caetera in the Requerimiento's fusion of conversion and for book report conquest: In effect, the Requerimiento enabled the Spanish to example report occupy the Americas by employing a legal ritual that allowed them to adhere to the letter of Innocent IV's opinion on infidel dominium while missing its spirit (27). Ironically, the suppressed discourse of eternal sunshine essay Sepúlveda recognizes the of discussion in lab report futility of such practices, dismissing them as useless and inexpedient: to introduce this warning as necessary were nothing else than to basicly [sic] hinder the completed pious expedition, bringing salvation to the barbarians, and consequently to impede their conversion, which is the purpose of the war ( Defense 30-31).
In this way, a justifier who has never been to the New World forms a kinship with his colonizing brethren in terms of a practical dismissal of the niceties of example justification. (7) As conquest discourse heats up in the years immediately preceding the Valladolid debate on Amerindian capacity, the yawning gulf between theory and practice gapes even wider. Francisco de Vitoria interprets the Law of Nations to mean that neither mortal sin in general or [. . . ] the particular sin of unbelief justifies seizing dominium from the Native Americans (246). Additionally, Vitoria's arguments against princely and al qaeda research papal authority with regard to the subjection of infidels threaten to sever the thread of logic spun by of discussion in lab that most strident champion of 10 good to use in essays Spanish imperialism, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda (Pagden 18). While the language of both the papal bull Sublimus Deus and the New Laws of 1542 paid lip service to a chimeric ideal of Indian dominium , such dominium was inherently rejected the moment the first colonizers set foot on what would become American soil. (8) The 16th century Spanish theologian and royal historian Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda was educated at the University of Alcalá and established himself as a learned translator and commentator on Aristotle at example in lab, the College of San Clemente in Bologna, later serving the papal court in research outline, Rome. Example! Returning to Spain in cover report, 1536, Sepúlveda was appointed as an example historian to the Spanish Crown. (9) The two most widely discussed pieces of Sepúlveda's written corpus in Spanish conquest scholarship are the books Demócrates Primus o De la conformidad de la milicia con la Religión Cristiana [ First Demócrates or On Militant Conformity with Christian Religion ] and Demócrates Segundo (also known as Demócrates Alter ) o De las Justas Causas de la Guerra contra los Indios [ Second Demócrates or On the Just Causes of eternal of the mind War Against the Indians ]. Written as dialogues in which a character named Demócrates argues with a character named Leopoldo, the first of these attempts to justify Charles V's religious wars against example report the Turks and the second aims to do the same with regard to essay of school life the Spanish conquest of the New World.
The text representing Sepúlveda's side in example of discussion in lab report, the Valladolid debate, Defense of the Book on the Just Causes of War, is Sepúlveda's summary of the ideas contained in Demócrates Segundo . 10 Good In Essays! (10) While Demócrates Segundo is available in example of discussion, Spanish, thanks to the scholarly efforts of 20th century translator and completed thesis Sepúlveda specialist Angel Losada, the example of discussion report dearth of English translations of any of Sepúlveda's works attests to not only his marginalization as an unpopular thinker in contemporary terms but also to active suppression of his works in the 16th and essay on importance 17th centuries. In preliminary documents framing his Defense , Sepúlveda laments the condemnation of his book Demócrates Segundo by the Universities of Salamanca and example in lab report Alcalá, pronouncing such disapproval not really a judgment from the outline University, but an artificial tampering by a few corrupters [ No se trató realmente de un juicio de la Universidad, sino de un artificio amañado por unos cuantos corruptores ] (Sepúlveda, Apología 58). Noting that there were discussions about suppressing Sepúlveda's book prior to the Valladolid debate (179), Bernice Hamilton surmises that the example in lab University ban on Sepúlveda probably resulted from the widespread influence of Vitoria, two of whose students held the chairs of St. Thomas at Alcalá in 1548 (175). (11) According to Hamilton, The only well-known work in our field which seems to cover have been totally suppressed in the period [the 16th century] was Sepúlveda's Democrates Alter [ Secundus ], which argued that the Indians of the New World were natural slaves, and example of discussion report was suppressed on grounds of on importance a moral disapprobation which we might well share today (10). But rather than credit the moral sensibilities of example 16th century Spanish thinkers, it makes more sense to surmise that they viewed this work as too potentially inflammatory, perhaps for completed thesis its truthfulness in in lab, terms of conquest practice. Paper! (12) The suppression of Sepúlveda continues into the 17th century.
In his discussion of the 17th century Spanish justifier Juan de Solórzano y Pereira, James Muldoon adds the following: (13) Solórzano said that he himself did not possess a copy of Sepúlveda's book, because Philip II had banned its circulation. The stated reason for this censorship, curious in that the author provided a strong defense of the conquest, was that the book had not been printed at the royal press. Of Discussion Report! The real reason, according to Solórzano, was that Sepúlveda's work contained material that was not suitable for the general public to hear. (27) (14) What was deemed unsuitable for 10 good words to use in essays general consumption is the revelation of the contradiction at the heart of example of discussion report justification literature: the twisting of authoritative precedent through a Eurocentric, imperialist mentality, compounded in Sepúlveda's works by eternal sunshine spotless mind essay an appeal to an expedient pragmatism that threatens to expose the hypocrisy of the theoretical discourse and thus blow down the of discussion report entire house of cards. (15) In his journey from Spanish encomendero to Apostle of the page Indians, Bartolomé de las Casas experienced a conversion inspired by the bearing of in lab report horrific witness to Spanish atrocities upon paper on acute lymphocytic leukemia Native Americans. Unlike Sepúlveda, Las Casas lived and worked among Indians in the New World, first as their subjugator and later as their would-be liberator. Deified in some scholarly circles and vilified in others for his promulgation of the Black Legend of the barbarous Spanish conquistador, Las Casas's prolific body of work has been widely translated and in lab discussed, due largely to its humanistic appeal, which is, indeed, more than considerable given its era and circumstances. However, seldom critiqued is the Eurocentric, Christian-centered superiority that manifests itself in Las Casas's main praise of Native Americans as docile and submissive, ripe for page for book report conversion. (16) Among the Las Casas works on Native Americans available in English translation are his History of the Indies and his Brief Account of the Devastation of the Indies , also known as The Spanish Cruelties. Example! His response to Sepúlveda, entitled In Defense of the Indians , was translated to English by Stafford Poole in 1974. (17) As stated above, the Sepúlveda text of the Valladolid debate is Sepúlveda's own summary of ideas contained in his book Demócrates Segundo . Sepúlveda's summary is research paper outline entitled Defense of the in lab Book on the Just Causes of War [ Apología del Libro de las Justas Causas de la Guerra ]. Al Qaeda Paper Outline! Las Casas's response to Sepúlveda's relatively short summary is of discussion report a book-length treatise entitled In Defense of the Indians . To confuse matters slightly, both texts are referred to in Spanish as Apología , which translates as Defense . Not a debate in essay of school life, the traditional sense of the word, the proceedings at Valladolid consisted not of the in lab two men arguing face-to-face but in the council's analyses of Sepúlveda's Apología [ Defense ] vs. Las Casas's Apología [ Defense ]. The Justifying Text: No Apology. (18) The structure of Sepúlveda's Defense is somewhat problematic in terms of the linear flow of its organization. Sepúlveda begins with the seven arguments of his opponents, follows that with his own general argument, made in four main points, then returns to sunshine of the mind essay the seven opposing arguments to of discussion report address them sequentially. The result is that the point-by-point response seems somewhat tacked on, less a developed argument than an exercise in of the analytical, semantics. But the overall tone that emerges from example of discussion in lab report, Sepúlveda's discourse is one of pragmatic expediency, a motivation that allows him to dismiss appeals to morality and ethics in much the same ways that the actual practice of conquest does.
Seven Objections of the Unjustifiers. (19) The seven objections to which Sepúlveda responds may be paraphrased as follows: 1) Wars are only justified if they avenge injuries, and in this case the barbarians had afflicted the Christians with no injury (6). 2) War as a means of spreading Christianity is unjust. 3) This war is contrary to the example of Christ (7). 4) Conversion is better accomplished through proselytizing than by war. 5) No prior warning was issued. 6) One cannot do evil to achieve good. 7) The Church and the Pope have no jurisdiction over infidels. (20) Sepúlveda's first argument appeals to the doctrines of cover page for book St. Thomas Aquinas and to Aristotle's theory of natural slavery to suggest that Native Americans are barbarians and therefore must submit to Spanish governance: “For those are frankly called barbarians,” as Thomas maintains, “who are lacking in rational power either on account of an environment from which dullness for the most part is found or due to some evil habit by which men become like brutes,” and furthermore races of this sort by right of nature ought to obey those who are more civilized, prudent, and outstanding so that they may be governed by better customs and usages. (9) Referring to the precedence of of discussion report Roman rule, Sepúlveda suggests an inevitability to the process of conquest as a sort of ongoing natural law. Research! (21) Sepúlveda's second point justifying war is the charge that these barbarians commit crimes against example of discussion in lab report the law of nature, namely, idolatry and human sacrifice.
Attempting to cover find some traction on of discussion in lab report the slippery slope of the 10 good words to use in essays argument that all mortal sins are contrary to the law of nature (15), since obviously members of the conquering race could not claim sinlessness, Sepúlveda here makes an interesting move: that nation is to be understood as not keeping the law of nature in which any mortal sin is not considered a shameful act, but rather publicly approved, such as the murder of innocent people who were sacrificed in many localities and prevalent idolatry, which is the most serious of sins, is approved among these barbarians. (15) Thus Sepúlveda acknowledges a degree of of discussion in lab autonomy of native customs and cultures which he uses against itself by suggesting that a society that sanctions a certain behavior can be held liable for infractions against natural law, while a society that outlaws such practices complies with natural law, regardless of the page infractions of that society's individuals (i.e., the Spaniards). Similarly, with regard to example in lab conquest discourse as a whole, the implication seems to be that a society can cover itself by adopting an official practice that qualifies conquest while allowing individuals to research paper operate in an unchecked fashion. Additionally, this second argument contradicts the first by acknowledging that these barbarians are subjected to their own institutional forms of culture. (22) In making his third point, that Spanish intervention will save thousands of potential victims of human sacrifice, Sepúlveda stresses a monstrosity so abhorrent that it leads upright men to doubt whether the natives can be converted (17). Yet throughout he maintains conversion as the single goal of example report conquest, a perfect illustration of the way in which conquest discourse pays lip service to high ideals, while conquest practice is driven by less lofty motivations and assumptions. (23) Sepúlveda develops his fourth point at great length, the controversial argument that the driving need to save Native souls even against research paper their will justifies the use of force. Of Discussion! It is here that Sepúlveda makes an appeal to expediency that aligns his argument more closely with conquest practice as opposed to conquest theory. Repeated references to the removal of obstacles to the propagation of the faith take on ominous significance when one considers how often the obstacles removed were the individuals themselves. In this section Sepúlveda counters charges of sunshine spotless analytical his methods as being antithetical to example in lab Christ's example by to use in essays appealing to a might-makes-right philosophy and the increased power of the report Church and Christian princes. According to Sepúlveda, as practice has taught and continues to teach, force is the most expedient means to subdue people. (24) Although he does not refer to the Requerimiento specifically, Sepúlveda dismisses the words requirement of providing prior warning as a useless hindrance to conquest. Example Of Discussion! Correctly recognizing the travesty inherent in al qaeda, shouting legalities in Spanish at uncomprehending natives, and even acknowledging that no one is likely to submit under such circumstances, Sepúlveda proposes eliminating the practice of prior warning, anticipating and reflecting actual conquest practice. Sepúlveda's Response to the Seven Objections. (25) In responding specifically to the seven arguments of his opponents, Sepúlveda recycles several of his previous assertions and adds some creatively flawed new ones.
To the first charge that no injury has been committed, Sepúlveda responds that God has been injured by report native idolatrous practices, and 10 good to use that the Spanish have been injured by native resistance. In countering the second, third, fourth, and in lab fifth objections he simply reiterates his previous points about the removal of obstacles, might makes right, and expediency. His reasoning is most strikingly circular in his response to the sixth objection, that it is impossible to wage war without committing sin. Cover For Book! Dismissing this as simply an anti-war statement that is therefore implicitly preposterous, Sepúlveda goes on to argue that since the benefits of example in lab conquest to the Natives outweigh its evils, it is those who argue against colonization who mistreat the Indians: those who attempt to obstruct this expedition so the barbarians would not come to the Christians' terms do not humanely favor the barbarians as they themselves wish to seem but cruelly begrudge them most of the greatest goods (40). Sepúlveda sidesteps altogether the seventh objection questioning papal and princely authority over infidels, citing the lives and deaths of the Apostles to maintain that it is properly of the page apostolic duty to give assistance to convert them to belief in Christ, preach the gospel to them, and to example in lab report try according to one's ability everything that is conducive to most suitably rendering this service (41). Ambiguous language like according to mind analytical essay one's ability and most suitably provide practitioners of conquest with tons of in lab report leeway. Las Casas's Response: A Brief Account. (26) Las Casas's response to Sepúlveda is lengthy and words in essays intricate, but a brief discussion of a few of his points will suffice here to establish the tenor of the opposing argument. In countering Sepúlveda's first charge of Indian barbarism, Las Casas identifies four distinct types of example of discussion in lab barbarians, the first of which he defines by barbaric behavior: First, barbarian in the loose and broad sense of the word means any cruel, inhuman, wild, and merciless man acting against human reason out of anger or native disposition, so that, putting aside decency, meekness, and humane moderation, he becomes hard, severe, quarrelsome, unbearable, cruel, and research lymphocytic leukemia plunges blindly into crimes that only the wildest beasts of the forest would commit ( In Defense 28-29). In an astute move, Las Casas turns the tables of discourse on the barbarian: Indeed, our Spaniards are not unacquainted with a number of these practices.
On the contrary, in the absolutely inhuman things they have done to those nations they have surpassed all other barbarians (29). (27) In countering Sepúlveda's second charge regarding Indian crimes against natural law, Las Casas goes so far as to suggest that even cannibalism is not intrinsically evil in cases of necessity and extreme hunger. In Lab! Elsewhere, in his Brief Account of the Devastation of the Indies , Las Casas tells the cover for book lurid tale of a human abattoir sanctioned by Spanish conquerors in which natives are forced to perform cannibalism. While as unverifiable as other charges of Native cannibalism, this account may serve as a metaphor for example of discussion the way in of the spotless mind analytical, which the Native is figuratively made a cannibal by propagandist accounts of barbarianism. (28) Las Casas troubles the in lab report logic of Sepúlveda's third argument on conquest as the salvation of the innocent by considering its practical execution, noting that in an actual war it is impossible to separate the oppressed from the oppressors. Finally, the overarching premise of Las Casas's position is his opposition to Sepúlveda's most controversial position: that conversion can and should be effected by force. Arguing throughout his many treatises for a kinder, gentler conversion, Las Casas never once questions the Christianizing mission itself, thus paradoxically maintaining the very Eurocentrism that promotes forcible conquest. (29) I have posited Sepúlveda as the research paper on acute leukemia loser in the Valladolid debate due to the subsequent suppression of his work cited above. However, neither side can be said to of discussion in lab have conceded. As Lewis Hanke relates, The judges at Valladolid, probably exhausted and confused by the sights and sounds of this mighty conflict, fell into argument with one another and reached no collective decision.
Las Casas later stated that the decision had been favorable to research on acute his viewpoint, although unfortunately for the Indians the example report measures decreed by the Council were not well executed, and Sepúlveda wrote to a friend that the judges thought it right and lawful that the barbarians of the New World should be brought under the dominion of the Christians, only one theologian dissenting ( All Mankind Is One 113). Thesis! Although he does not concede, Las Casas here perhaps recognizes that Sepúlveda's views will win the day in example of discussion report, the New World. Bolstering his argument by attacking Sepúlveda's attempts to legitimize his views through publication, Las Casas mentions that Sepúlveda offers as a confirmation of his contagious opinion, that is, a work on Indian affairs which its author, a certain Oviedo, calls A General History ( In Defense 343). Las Casas here properly recognizes the on importance of school contagious nature of Sepúlveda's theory as epitomizing the tenets of actual conquest practice. Conclusion: Sepúlveda's Theory as Conquest Practice. (30) The reluctance on the part of the in lab report Spanish Crown and universities to legitimate Sepúlveda's work by research paper on acute lymphocytic leukemia approval or publication suggests the theorists' need to dissociate themselves from the dirty practice of conquest, about which Sepúlveda's work is not only surprisingly accurate but strikingly non-apologetic. A brief quotation from the Oviedo work mentioned above will suffice to establish a link between Sepúlveda's derogatory opinion of Amerindians and that of a conquistador in the field. Her conclusion is that we need to personally decide not to use a cell phone while driving and that we need to educate our friends and thesis, family to give up cell phones while driving, too.
Then add a thesis statement like one of the following examples: (Agree) I agree with Johnson because I have observed many people driving dangerously while talking on cell phones and have even been in an accident myself while talking on of discussion in lab, the phone. (Disagree ) I disagree with Johnson because I don’t think that using a cell phone is any different from eating in a car or talking with other passengers. (Reflect on author’s experience ) I believe Johnson has come to to use, her conclusions because of her own traumatic experiences while using a cell phone while driving. Example Report! (Optional: you could add an extension, like but personal experiences are not a good basis for public policy.) (Expand on an assertion made in the essay ) I agree with Johnson’s assertion that cell phones are dangerous, but I’d go even further than she does because I think we cannot control this problem by 10 good words to use in essays, merely educating the example report public. We need to have laws prohibiting the use of cell phones while driving. Here are six different ways to respond to an essay:

You can agree with some parts of the article and disagree with other parts and explain why. You can explain your reaction to the article and then analyze how the writer’s style, tone, word choice, and examples made you feel that way. Remember that all essays have three main parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. Example Of Discussion! There are many ways to lymphocytic, write a good essay, but I will give you a general guide to follow which will help you to organize your ideas.
